The international organization SIBMAS was established in 1954. The primary aim of the organization is to support continual interaction between international libraries, specialized museums, documentation and information centres of practical and theoretical experience, coordinate activities and create opportunities for exchange between its members. Every two years, SIBMAS hosts specialized conferences whose themes focus on issues of predetermined subjects.
The first plenary meeting of the Czech Centre SIBMAS took place at the Theatre Institute in Prague on June 8, 1993. In a way similar to the SIBMAS international organization, the Czech Centre SIBMAS brings together the Czech, Moravian and Silesian libraries and museums that have theatre collections, as well as archives of various theatres and libraries of specialized schools. The primary goal is to exchange practical and theoretical information from all areas of work of its individual members, and work together within the framework of national and supra-national projects. The Czech Centre SIBMAS performs a scholastic role in the fields of theatre studies in the broadest sense of the word.
The National Centre of SIBMAS holds its meetings twice a year – in the Spring and Autumn. Detailed minutes are taken during each plenary, outlining the topics, assignments and responsibilities discussed during the meetings.
The Theatre Institute, located at Celetná 17, 110 00 Praha 1, performs the role of the Secretariat of the National Centre within the framework of its international relation departments. The Secretary of the Czech Centre SIBMAS is Helena Hantáková, and Sylva Pracná was elected President of the National Centre in 2011.
